Polycom buys SpectraLink
Under terms of the agreement, all of the outstanding shares of SpectraLink will be bought for $11.75 per share. For 2006, Spectralink reported revenues of $144.8 million. Polycom expects the purchase to immediately add to its revenues with existing SpectraLink (wireless) opportunities in non-overlapping markets combined with new opportunities in Polycom's SMB and hosted IP telephony markets.
The purchase puts Polycom in leadership positions in both the wired and wireless IP phone markets and can leverage the market and technology advantages from a combined product portfolio. Polycom can now move its IP-based collaboration solution into the mobile environment; its customers have been "demanding" wireless solutions in the enterprise and vertical markets, according to Polycom CEO Robert Hagerty. Plugging SpectraLink's wireless handsets into Polycom's enterprise SIP solutions is listed as the first "immediate synergy" of the forthcoming integration. Polycom also expects to leverage SpectraLink's strength in vertical markets such as retail, hospitality and healthcare.
Polycom hasn't been shy about acquiring new technologies to add to their portfolio. In January, the company bought privately-held Destiny Conferencing for its collection of telepresence patents. The Destiny deal is worth an initial $47.6 million in cash, with up to $10 million more in "kickers" if they hit certain financial targets.
